The sisters opened a small sweets shop in 1968.
They wanted a small but solid and reliable store, so they named it "Kurumi (walnut)" after the location, where there was originally a walnut grove, and the old address of the shop was Inari-koji Kurumi-ga-tani.
They asked a young artist who lived nearby to design the logo letters for the shop name.
That person was painter Junsaku Koizumi, who later became famous for his dragon ceiling paintings at Kenchoji Temple in Kamakura and Kenninji Temple in Kyoto.
